What are Slotting Controls?

Slotting Controls are the configuration rules that govern where products are stored in your warehouse. They include ABC velocity classifications, zone restrictions, dimensional constraints, and putaway priority logic—all working together to ensure optimal inventory placement.

While Dynamic Slotting uses AI to continuously optimize placement, Slotting Controls define the rules that govern what's allowed. Think of controls as the guardrails: hazmat can only go to hazmat zones, heavy items go to floor level, and A-velocity items get priority in prime pick locations.

Slotting Controls + Dynamic Slotting = Intelligent Putaway

Slotting Controls define what's allowed. Dynamic Slotting determines what's optimal. Together, they ensure inventory lands in the best compliant location every time—without manual decision-making at the floor level.

In JASCI, Slotting Controls are configured through the admin console and apply automatically during receiving and putaway. As product characteristics or warehouse layouts change, simply update the rules—the system handles the rest.

ABC Velocity Classification

Automatically classify products by movement speed and slot accordingly

A

Fast Movers

Top 20% by velocity. Slot to golden zones, eye-level pick faces, closest to packing.

Examples: Best sellers, promotional items, high-turn SKUs
B

Medium Movers

Middle 30% by velocity. Slot to secondary zones, accessible but not prime.

Examples: Regular sellers, seasonal items (in-season)
C

Slow Movers

Bottom 50% by velocity. Slot to reserve storage, upper/lower levels, back of warehouse.

Examples: Long-tail SKUs, seasonal items (off-season), spare parts

Types of Slotting Controls

Multiple control layers work together for intelligent placement

Zone-Based Controls

  • Hazmat-only zones
  • Temperature-controlled areas
  • High-security zones
  • Flammable storage
  • Food-grade areas

Product-Based Controls

  • ABC velocity classification
  • Product family grouping
  • Dimensional requirements
  • Weight restrictions
  • Stackability rules

Location-Based Controls

  • Pick face vs. reserve
  • Level preferences (eye-level priority)
  • Aisle accessibility
  • Equipment requirements
  • Capacity thresholds

Key Capabilities

Comprehensive slotting configuration for any warehouse complexity

ABC Velocity Codes

Classify products by movement velocity (A=fast, B=medium, C=slow). High-velocity items automatically slot to prime pick zones.

Zone Restrictions

Define where product types can and cannot be stored. Enforce hazmat zones, temperature requirements, and security areas.

Dimensional Constraints

Match product dimensions to location capacity. Prevent oversized items from slotting to small bins.

Weight Limits

Configure weight limits per location. Heavy items automatically route to floor-level or reinforced racking.

Product Affinity Rules

Slot frequently-picked-together items near each other. Reduce travel time for common order combinations.

Putaway Priority Logic

Define the hierarchy for location selection: zone → aisle → level → available space. Customize per product class.

Configuration Workflow

Set up slotting controls in six straightforward steps

1

Access Slotting Controls

Navigate to Warehouse Configuration → Slotting Controls in the JASCI admin console.

2

Define ABC Codes

Set velocity thresholds and assign products to A, B, or C classifications based on movement data.

3

Configure Zone Rules

Define zone restrictions, product-zone mappings, and storage requirements per area.

4

Set Putaway Priorities

Establish the decision hierarchy for location selection during putaway.

5

Test & Validate

Run test putaways to confirm slotting logic produces expected results.

6

Monitor & Adjust

Review slotting efficiency reports and refine rules as demand patterns change.
