What is User-Directed Putaway?

User-Directed Putaway (also called "Select Location" or "Operator-Directed Putaway") is a WMS workflow where operators choose their own storage destination instead of following system-assigned locations. JASCI validates the chosen location and updates inventory in real-time.

This approach is ideal for warehouses with experienced operators who know the layout well, operations dealing with frequent overflow situations, or facilities where rigid slotting isn't practical. It provides flexibility while maintaining full inventory accuracy through scan-based validation.

When to Use User-Directed

User-directed putaway works best when operators need flexibility—overflow situations, mixed storage zones, or when experienced staff can make faster decisions than the system. For warehouses that want to enforce strict slotting strategies, considerSystem-Directed Putaway instead.

In JASCI, operators can accept a system-suggested location or press "New Location" to choose their own. Either way, they scan the destination to confirm and complete the putaway. The system validates every location to prevent errors.

Why User-Directed Putaway Matters

Sometimes operators know best. Give them the flexibility to make smart decisions while the system ensures nothing gets lost.

Operational Flexibility

Handle overflow, seasonal surges, and unusual product mixes without rigid system constraints slowing you down.

Experienced Team Leverage

Let veteran operators use their warehouse knowledge to make fast, smart putaway decisions.

Full Accountability

Every location choice is scanned and validated. You always know exactly where inventory is.

How JASCI Delivers User-Directed Putaway

Operator choice with system validation and instant inventory updates

Operator Location Choice

Operators select their preferred putaway location instead of following system assignments. Great for experienced staff who know the warehouse.

System Validation

Even with operator choice, JASCI validates that the selected location is appropriate for the product type and storage requirements.

"New Location" Override

If the system suggests a location but the operator prefers another, they can select "New Location" to scan a different destination.

Real-Time Inventory Update

Once the operator scans the chosen location, inventory is immediately updated and available for allocation.

Continuous Workflow

After completing one putaway, operators can continue to the next LPN without returning to the menu—streamlined for high-volume operations.

Error Prevention

Invalid locations trigger immediate error messages with clear guidance, preventing inventory misplacement.

User-Directed Putaway Workflow

Flexible location selection with scan-based validation

1

Scan the LPN

Operator scans the putaway LPN on the received freight. The system validates it's ready for putaway.

2

View Suggested Location

JASCI displays product information and a suggested putaway location (if configured).

3

Select "New Location"

If the operator prefers a different location, they select the "New Location" button on the handheld.

4

Scan Desired Location

JASCI prompts the operator to scan the barcode of their chosen location.

5

System Validates

The system confirms the location is valid. If not, an error displays and the operator rescans.

6

Putaway Complete

Inventory is updated. If more LPNs remain, select "Continue" to putaway the next one.
